Twacism: Swiss Footballer, Michel Morganella Kicked Out Of Olympics 2000 For Racist Tweet
Michel Morganella has been kicked out of the Olympic Games 2012 for a racist tweet. After the Switzerland defender’s team lost to South Korea yesterday, Morganella made a racist remark that was offensive to South Korean’s and although it has a couple of interpretations – he quickly recanted it.
Here are four interpretations of what Michel Morganella said.
“I’m going to beat up every Korean. Go on – burn yourselves! Bunch of mongoloids.”
“I am going to batter the Koreans, burn them all… bunch of ‘trisos’.” (trisos is French slang for person with Down’s Syndrome)
“I trap all Koreans, are you all burn, trisos band
“I want to beat up all South Koreans! Bunch of mentally handicapped retards!”
French soccer player Thierry Henry has complained for years that footballers and their fans are racist but none have outted at such a public forum as the Olympic Summer Games 2012 like Morganella. Social media is a powerful tool that can be abused and athletes are taking advantage of it.
Is Twitter becoming the new source for digi-racism? It seems it has become a haven for e-racism or “Twacism” from people who are not able to make the same commentary in face-to-face settings and cower behind a keyboard.
Of course the usual apology quickly ensued from Michel:
“I apologize sincerely to the people of South Korea, to the players, but equally to the Swiss delegation and Swiss football in general. It’s clear that I’m accepting the consequences.”
“After the disappointing result and the reaction from Korea that followed, I made a huge error.”
We predicted two days ago after the Voula Papachristou debacle that she wouldn’t be the only person to make a racist tweet and get booted out of the Olympic Games. We specifically stated that it would be someone on the losing end who couldn’t handle the social responsibility of social media and the public spotlight. – Thx Michel Morganella for vindicating us.
